Commercial Supplies News
After a whirlwind two months of Trade Shows and displays at Association Conferences, we have returned to a wild and wintry Auckland wishing for some sunshine. Many thanks to members of the @home, Holiday Parks New Zealand and MANZ groups for supporting us at your Annual Conferences. It's always great to meet you face-to-face and talk about your needs for the forthcoming year.

Whilst we are travelling around the country we stay in many different properties and we thought it would be good to make a note of some of the small things that can be done at no or very little cost, that will make your property more appealing to guests to return and to tell their friends. Here are some of our observations:
Pillows are one of the things in your room that a guest will become very close to. After 18 months of use, 10% of the weight of a pillow will be made up of dustmites, mould, mildew, bacteria and all sorts of other greeblies - yuck! Take a good hard look at the pillows in all your rooms and cupboards. If you were coming into this room for the first time to spend a night, would you be happy sleeping on them? Are there any yellow marks or stains on them? Smell them - do they smell fresh and clean or can you imagine the last 20 people breathing and dribbling on them? If they are stained, please throw them out!
Pillow Protectors are for the peace of mind of both your guest and you. They can be washed after each stay and give you the peace of mind that you are going to get longer life out of your pillows and that you are protecting the health of your guest. You choose whether you prefer the polycotton zipped variety of the quilted padded zipped sort - this is personal choice of the person doing the washing!
Mattress Protectors - Are they clean? Do they have any stains on them? Are they washed and changed after each guest leaves? Do they smell clean and fresh? If not, out they go! Your guests should not be able to tell the DNA makeup of the last 20 people who have slept in their bed!!
Beds - Are they supportive? Is the mattress clean or is it stained and horrible? If it is double or larger, are the springs still good? Get someone to get on the other side of the bed while you are lying down. Do you nearly jump out of bed. Both lie down - do you roll to the middle? Get the other person to turn over, do you nearly roll out of bed? If you are unsure, check into the room on a quiet night and experience it first hand. If you aren't happy sleeping in it, do you think a guest is likely to want to come back?
Shower Curtains - make sure they are washed regularly to prevent scum and mildew forming on the hem.
Heating - in winter make sure that the heaters in the room work and that they are up to the job of heating the room efficiently. More power will be used if a heater is not efficient and has to be kept on high for longer to get the room to an acceptably warm temperature. If the heater is in the lounge in a 1 or 2-bedroom unit, do you have heating in the bedroom? If you know your guest is going to be checking in late or is out working late, it's a nice thought to pop the heater on so their room is warm when they get in.
Bathroom - is there efficient ventilation in the bathroom. You will cut down on moisture and mildew damage by providing an efficient exhaust/heating system.
Smells - a lot of motels now have little signs and notes in the Guest Folder requesting guests refrain from cooking food that gives off odours such as curry and fish.
TV - Think about the height of the TV and the seating arrangement if you have chairs etc. Most guests will want to lie on the bed and watch TV. If you have it on a low stand please make sure you have comfy chairs to sit in that can be turned so that you can watch TV without getting a crick in your neck, cushions are a nice addition!! Consider a flat screen mounted up high - stops guests twiddling the knobs and everyone in the family can see it! TVs can be leased from DTR for a small weekly outlay.
Cleanliness - general housekeeping rules apply - make sure your housekeepers vacuum along the skirting boards and around headboards. Make sure rooms are dusted.
None of the above will cost the earth but will make the world of difference to the weary traveller. Add a big welcoming smile and they will come back time and time again and tell all their friends what a lovely place you have to stay in. You don't have to be the Ritz, just give them a good night's sleep.
