When an NZ King bed is split into two beds, the result is two Narrow Long Single beds – 83.5cm wide x 203cm long.

When an NZ Super King bed is split into two beds, the result is two Long Single beds – 91.5cm wide x 203cm long.

A normal Single bed is 91cm wide x 188cm long.

It is often thought that the result of a split bed is a King Single bed, however this is not the case unless the original size bed was a Californian King (2.14 metres x 2.03 metres). A King Single bed measures 107cm wide x 203cm long and this means that although the length is right, it is much wider than a Single bed. It is worth noting here that not all Californian King beds are made the same size - different manufacturers make them different sizes - they can vary from 204cm wide up to 214cm wide or more! 

We always advise our customers who are purchasing a split bed to choose an NZ Super King bed if they can possibly fit it in their room because it is much easier to get linen to fit this size – Long Single size is available in sheets, mattress protectors and valances, and it is possible to use a stock Single bedspread, top sheet or duvet cover because the length doesn’t really matter. On the other hand trying to get linen to fit a Narrow Long Single bed is a challenge and will need to be made to order at extra expense to off-the-shelf solutions, and whilst duvet covers will work as they will just drape more on the sides, bedspreads and valances will have to be custom made too.

So if you are thinking about purchasing a split bed, always choose an NZ Super King if you can fit it in, and if you are buying linen for an existing split bed, get out the tape measure and check the width before you order so you get the right fit first time.
